|The Pecha Kucha Night Taos Volume 10 Food Edition will be held on
August 11, 2013 at the at the Taos Mesa Brewing.
This is the first of these drawings made by Food Not Bombs co-founder Keith McHenry. He penciled the drawing and drew
over the pencil with a cheap blue pen. He used the back of an extra poster he had kept from his job distributing announcements
for art galleries,
theater and dance companies. He based the idea of the drawing on the perspective used by Flemish
painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
The original drawing was used to make the flyer announcing the 1995 Food Not Bombs International
Gathering in San Francisco.
The gathering was held during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the founding of the United Nations.
The celebration featured the dedication by Mayor Frank Jordan of a monument to the Universal Decleration of Human Rights.
At the same time the mayor was having Food Not Bombs arrested at United Nations Plaza for feeding the hungry and working for
peace and social justice.
Volunteers held workshops on issues like organic gardening, how to build a low powered FM radio transmitter,
how to use vegetable oil to power vehicles. Indymedia was founded to provide news during the gathering.
The gathering also inspired an increase in the creation of low powered FM radio stations and the formation of Indymedia Centers.
Participants also occupied empty housing at the closed Presidio military base
inspiring the organizing of Homes Not Jails
projects in other cities. Many participants returned home to
start new Food Not Bombs groups, Indymdia Centers, radio stations,
community gardens and Homes Not Jails groups. You can learn more at this video.
